If your puppy becomes extra mouthy, wild, or completely undone in the evening, you’re not imagining things. Many puppies bite more when they’re overtired—not because they’re aggressive, but because their nervous system is overwhelmed.

What’s really happening?

Puppies don’t know how to self-regulate yet. When they’re tired, their impulse control drops, frustration rises, and biting becomes a default coping behavior.

This is especially common:

• After busy days

• After long walks

• During evening “witching hours”

• Signs tiredness is the trigger

• Biting escalates late in the day

• Your puppy ignores cues they normally follow

• Zoomies followed by nipping

• Difficulty settling even after exercise

What helps?

• Enforced naps (especially for puppies under 6 months)

• Calm transitions after activity

• Redirection to soothing chews

• Short training sessions instead of more exercise

Trying to “wear them out” often backfires.
